Awards Won by NWSE Students
at the 2002 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair

The winning projects from the Intel Northwest Science Expo attended the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Louisville, Ky May 12-18. The ISEF brings together over 1200 of the most talented students in science and engineering from the US and over 40 countries for a week of competition and fun activities.
These NWSE winners won the following awards:

Mark W. Knight, Catlin Gabel School, Portland "Design and Fabrication of a Peristaltic Micropump."
          $3,000 First Award in the engineering category
          a full-tuition scholarship to the University of Louisville
          
$500 from the Schlumberger Excellence in Educational Development
         Gradutate scholarship/fellowship of $5000 per year for the University of Kentucky

         US Navy and Marine Corps $8000 Scholarship

Korri Ayn Thiessen, Oregon Episcopal School, Portland. "Reduction of Intercellular Apurinic Endonuclease Levels with Age: Predisposition to Oxidative Damage Allied Neuro-Degenerative Disease."
          $1,500 Second Award in the gerontology category
          a full-tuition scholarship to the University of Louisville

Julia Ruby Baldwin and Chelsea B. Gokcay, Oregon Episcopal School, Portland
"Grading Disorder A."
          $500 Fourth Award in the Team Projects category

Southwest Regional Science Expo winners won the following awards:

Nicole Renee Blalock, Gold Beach High School, Gold Beach "Immune Response Initiation in Port Orford Cedar to Inhibit Phytophthora lateralis Infection."
          $3,000 in savings bonds from the U.S. Army

Raygen McKenzie Yantis, Gold Beach High School, Gold Beach "Mathematical Analysis of 'Sudden Oak Death' Epidemiology."
          $1,500 Second Award from the U.S. Air Force
          $250 Third Award from the American Phytopathological Society

NWSE is extremely proud of the tremendous accomplishments of its finalists at the Intel ISEF.
