What is the Tech Challenge Science Expo?
(mission, history, management)
The Tech Challenge Science Expo is affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and Science Service while coordinated and hosted by the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls , OR .
The mission of the Tech Challenge Science Expo is to develop scientific talent and promote science literacy in Southern Oregon students by providing a structure and a venue for presenting high quality student research. Students are encouraged to learn science by doing science as Tech Challenge Science Expo helps students to learn science, engineering and math by engaging in the activities that characterize these endeavors. The inaugural event was held March 11-12, 2004 . The 2006 event will be held February 18. The Tech Challenge Science Expo is held for 7th through 12th grade students. Students may compete in 14 categories encompassing all the scientific disciplines, engineering, computer science and mathematics. Participation comes from schools located in Klamath and Lake counties.
The Tech Challenge Science Expo aspires to inspire students to engage in scientific research and engineering. Students are motivated to perform by recognition and awards in science fairs just as they are for performance in athletics, music or drama. Furthermore, the Tech Challenge Science Expo aspires to encourage participation by groups underrepresented in science, mathematics and engineering professions, including young women, African-Americans, and Hispanics. The Tech Challenge Science Expo affords students a chance to mix with other students with a strong interest in science. This interaction encourages students' interest and sends a message that science is "cool." The experience can provide a counter balance to the all-too-common view that academic achievement is for nerds. The Tech Challenge Science Expo aspires to motivate young people to launch careers in engineering, the sciences, and mathematics.
The Tech Challenge Science Expo is affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and Science Service. Each affiliated fair sends at least two students, and up to three projects, all expenses paid, to compete at the Intel ISEF. In addition, awards and prizes are given for the best projects, as well as scholarships to attend the Oregon Institute of Technology. This recognition may provide the motivation necessary to inspire students to pour their lives into significant scientific, engineering and mathematical research.
The Tech Challenge Science Expo is administered by the Oregon Institute of Technology. The Tech Challenge Science Expo aspires to promote community/research/education partnerships that engage citizens and community institutions in the development and implementation of service programs employing the inquiry practices of science.
Tech Challenge Science Expo hopes that media coverage of the expo will inspire new students, teachers and parents to want to participate in the future.
