The Intel Northwest Science Expo welcomes our keynote speakers.
Middle School Keynote: Martha Andrews
Title: Software Engineer
Group: IBM's Software Group
Martha Andrews is a Software Engineer working in IBM's Software Group. Throughout her career, she has worked with software that helps other programmers create more software. Currently, she is making software that teams will use to communicate and coordinate work activities better. The software builds on the open-source Eclipse project and is developed with open software practices.
In her career, Martha has helped customers as a Technical Support Engineer, found defects in products as a Test Engineer, and created new projects as a Software Engineer. She has one patent in automating the creation of software and earned a Bachelors of Science in Software Engineering Technology from Oregon Institute of Technology.
Keynote Presentation Details: Martha will talk about how software engineers use the scientific method in the work they do. She will ask the audience to help her solve a problem by following the steps and applying tools that software engineers use everyday.
High School Keynote: Alexis Bruemmer
Title: Software Engineer
Group: Open source Linux kernel development and support
Alexis Bruemmer is a Software Engineer at IBM's Linux Technology Center (LTC). In the brief time that Alexis has been at IBM she has worked on several diverse and challenging projects - from hardware bring-up to operating system development. Most notable were her efforts, in conjunction with the Linux SCSI community, developing and stabilizing an open source version of a driver that supports the Adaptec 94xx SAS controller. Before her role as a Software Engineer Alexis interned at the Sandia National Lab's Center for Cyber Defenders where she developed various Internet security tools. Alexis graduated in 2005 as one of three valedictorians from The University of Pacific's School of Engineering and Computer Science with a BS in both Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering. At Pacific, Alexis was very active in many student clubs, including Society of Women Engineers (SWE). As a SWE member and eventual Pacific student section co-president she was presented with many opportunities, a combination of which lead to her current job.
Keynote Presentation Details: The keynote entitled "The Art of Climbing Totem Polls" will analyze the problem solving process and how it applies to life as well as engineering. Alexis' work with a virtual-reality project for a technical director for Industrial Light and Magic as well as the aic94xx driver will be used as real world examples.
