Engineer Day
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District, is celebrating Engineer Week by
hosting Engineer Day activities on Friday, Feb. 20, and we want to invite your science
and technology students to join us!
Students will see how engineering and science affects their lives everyday, everywhere,
by talking with engineers about what they do. Whether they are structural,
environmental, hydrological, electrical or mechanical engineers, their work uses some of
the cutting-edge technologies as they work to solve large and small problems.
The day will begin at the Portland District offices, 333 SW 1st Ave in Portland, at 8:45
a.m. when students will be welcomed by the District Commander. After that, students will
break into groups and spend 20 to 30 minutes learning about different types of
engineering. Topics will include hydropower generation and structural engineering, to
name just a few.
Following the "walkabout," students will enjoy lunch with Corps engineers and members of
the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) before returning to their schools
around 1:30 p.m.
Space is limited for this event, so I ask that you contact me no later than Feb. 4 with a
tentative number of attendees, following by confirmation and names no later than Tuesday,
Feb. 17 so we may prepare the entry badges for their Friday arrival. In the event there
is greater interest than space available, we will take reservations on a first-come,
first-served basis. Each student needs to bring their student I.D. and you should plan on
arriving no later than 8:30 a.m. to allow time to in-process at our security stations.
Please contact me by email or by phone if you have any questions.
I hope you and your students will be able to join us. Engineering and science are great
fun, and we need to make sure the next generation finds that to be true, too!
